What On Earth Are We Doing With Our Money?

You may already know Refinery29’s Money Diaries… this is our own version of it! We’ve put together a few questions to understand what women are doing with their money. Let’s break the taboo and talk more about finances!

It’s short, snappy, fun and anonymous.

Performance Manager. London. 31. Engaged.

💭 Financial goals:

Short term (1-5 years): Saving for our first home and relocation to New Zealand.

Medium term (5-10 years): Build on earnings to give any kids that come along a good future.

Long term (10 years +): Have enough money to live comfortably and travel.

🌟 Best buy ever: My degree, a bachelor of arts in Japanese and linguistics as it took me to my first real job teaching English in Japan. I haven't looked back from there.

😳 Worst buy ever: All the fast fashion that never fit nicely and ended up in charity store bags.

👀 Things you spend the most money on: Rent on a 1 bed flat in London and the monthly travel card.

💸 Salary / Income: £49,000

💰 Net worth (what you own vs what you owe, or your assets minus your debts): Joint savings of £75,000.

💻 Any side hustles: Nothing extra.

👛 Savings: Yes! I am saving around half my salary in pension, ISA and a term deposit. My partner does the same.

🏠 Home: Not yet. We wish we had bought sooner but now we're waiting to relocate then will buy a house.

🔦 Debt: No debt.

📈 Investing: I have a good workplace pension and I have been looking into investments but not taking the plunge.

😌 Pension: Yes, workplace pension.

🔮 Insurances: Just travel insurance.

What is money for you? Money is choices and security. Having savings in the bank enables me to feel like I can take chances and have something to fall back on.

🚀 What is financial independence for you? Being secure and ensuring I have my own personal savings. It is also about ensuring I continue to have good job prospects and will be able to increase my earnings over my lifetime.

THANK YOU!
