What On Earth Are We Doing With Our Money?

You may already know Refinery29’s Money Diaries… this is our own version of it! We’ve put together a few questions to understand what women are doing with their money. Let’s break the taboo and talk more about finances!

It’s short, snappy, fun and anonymous.

Social Media Manager. London. 29. Single.

💭 Financial goals:

Short term (1-5 years): Have an emergency fund (3 months expenses) in savings. Get out of credit card debt in the next two years.

Medium term (5-10 years): Substantial savings meaning that I can take a few months off work to travel.

Long term (10 years +): Live a gooood life (ie. be able to eat at all the restaurants I want!) and be able to retire comfortably.

🌟 Best buy ever: Every holiday I've ever been on. I shouldn't have got myself into so much credit card debt (and I'm working to fix it!), but I don't regret any of my trips. Weddings in Australia and Vietnam, family holidays in Europe, trips with my friends to Africa and visiting my dad in Shanghai. Worth. Every. Penny!

😳 Worst buy ever: Buying too many pairs of cheap shoes that don't last long, instead of just investing in one good pair. Bad for the environment, my wallet and my feet!

👀 Things you spend the most money on: Rent because it's London so of course it's rent.

💸 Salary / Income: £33,000

💰 Net worth (what you own vs what you owe, or your assets minus your debts): -£8,000 (credit card debt)

💻 Any side hustles: Currently selling lots on eBay but no, not an actual side hustle!

👛 Savings: Currently no savings as I am using all my spare cash to pay of my credit cards (yes, plural). Will work on savings once my debt is in a better position.

🏠 Home: No, I currently have no interest in buying a house. Even if I had the money, I'm such a commitaphobe - I can't picture it happening!

🔦 Debt: £9,000 in loan/credit card. It's a lot, but I am working hard on clearing it at the moment.

📈 Investing: Nope. Wouldn't even know where to begin, to be honest!

😌 Pension: Yes, standard contributions from my employer.

🔮 Insurances: Contents - £7 a month and phone insurance through work. I only recently got contents insurance and genuinely believe that it's the most grown up thing I've done this year!

What is money for you? Now I know they say that money can't buy happiness, but I might have to slightly disagree! Money is currently my main cause of anxiety and probably the thing that I am worst at!

🚀 What is financial independence for you? Not owing the big bad banks any money, having an emergency fund and living comfortably rather than pay check to pay check.

THANK YOU!
